The brief

An institution serving a whole community cannot publish for one kind of phone and ask everybody else to wait. Whatever was built had to arrive on iPhone and Android together, and keep arriving together with every update after that.

It also had to bring things that had been scattered into one place, so a person opens one app instead of remembering where each thing lives.

What it does

• Prayer times, wherever the person is. The times that matter, for the place they are in, without configuration that has to be understood first.
• The Quran, with recitation. Read or listen, with the audio built in rather than sending people elsewhere.
• Hadith and a mosque directory. Collections to read, and a directory to find the nearest mosque — both inside the same app.
• Donations, on a payment system built for them. Giving happens inside the app, through a payment and donation system built for the institution and running in production — not a bank transfer explained in a paragraph.
• Announcements that reach people. The institution can notify the community directly when something matters, rather than hoping it is seen on social media.
• One app, both stores, one release. iPhone and Android are built from the same work, so a new feature appears on both at the same time.

Beyond the phone

The same material also reaches people who are not on their phone: a companion browser extension puts prayer times and a daily verse on the new tab page. It is the same content, meeting people where they already are.
